Forward Bay Park

Aim: The examiners expect you to drive into a parking bay (either on the right or left - your choice), then reverse out in the same direction as you came from, and finally, move off returning to the left side of the road.

They expect you to be fully aware of your surroundings at all times and to react accordingly to other road users and pedestrians whilst performing the manoeuvre.

They also expect you to not drive into any opposing bays when reversing.

TIPS:

Do not complete this manoeuvre in one smooth attempt. The examiners want to see that you are fully aware of your surroundings. That means, you need to stop at every stage and have a good look around.

The Highway Code says that you should be mainly looking in the direction that you are going. So do not start reversing until you are looking in that direction.

So when you reverse out of the bay - LOOK INTO THE DIRECTION FROM WHERE YOU CAME!

Take your time.....the tortoise always wins!

Forward Bay Park - Stage 1

As with all manoeuvres, remember to use POM at every stage:

  • P - Prepare the car

  • O - Observe

  • M - Move

Stage 1: With Bay 4 being our target bay, check your internal mirror, right door mirror, signal right and drive forward until you are looking side on into the middle of Bay 5.

This is your point of turn (You may have to adjust your position dependent on the length of your car).

Stop!

P - PREPARE THE CAR

O - observe

M - move

Prepare the car ready to move by selecting 1st gear and find some bite.

P - Prepare the Car

O - OBSERVE

M - Move

Look around from left to right to make sure it is safe to move,

...then looking into the bay, turn the steering wheel full lock to the right and crawl forward making slight adjustments to your steering until you are nearing the rear of the bay. The kill your turn completely as you come to a stop.

Tip:

Make sure you know where the front of your car is so that you do not drive over the kerb at the rear of the bay.

You can do this by driving up to a line (any line in a quiet carpark will do), stopping as near to it as you can without driving over it, and then seeing where the line is in relation to your door mirrors. You this as a reference point. It's also handy when approaching give ways or stops at junctions

STOP!

...then looking through the rear offside window into the direction from which you came, slowly reverse a short distance (about 1 metre) whilst applying some right turn (NOT TOO MUCH), then straighten your wheels whilst still reversing slowly, and repeat. Come to a stop when the centre pillar of your car is in line with the front of the bay.

Tip:

By 'waggling' the car within the bay, your trying to point the rear of the car into the direction from which you came. Watch out for any cars parked next to you!

Keep checking for on-coming vehicles from both directions, and look out for any pedestrians crossing your path.

STOP!
