Aim: The examiners expect you to reverse into a parking bay in a controlled manner, clear of any lines and making sure that you are fully aware of your surroundings at all times.

They also expect to see you react accordingly to other road users whilst performing the manoeuvre.

TIPS:

Do not complete this manoeuvre in one smooth attempt. The examiners want to see that you are fully aware of your surroundings. That means, you need to stop at every stage and have a good look around.

The Highway Code says that you should be mainly looking in the direction that you are going. So do not start reversing until you are looking in that direction.

So when you turn into the bay - LOOK INTO THE BAY!

Take your time.....the tortoise always wins!

Reverse Bay Park - Stage 1

As with all manoeuvres, remember to use POM at every stage:

  • P - Prepare the car

  • O - Observe

  • M - Move

Stage 1: With Bay 6 being our target bay, drive past until you are looking side on into the middle of Bay 2 (In other words 4 bays past the target bay).

Stop!

P - PREPARE THE CAR

O - observe

M - move

Prepare the car ready to move by selecting reverse gear and finding some bite.

Stage 1 can be missed out when you become more confident with the manoeuvre, but for now use it to help line your car up leaving enough room away from the bays to allow you to turn in.

Reverse Bay Park - Stage 2

IMPORTANT NOTE: YOU MUST STOP REVERSING IF YOU SEE A CAR APPROACHING FROM EITHER THE FRONT OR BACK & ASSESS WHETHER OR NOT IT IS SAFE TO CONTINUE

P - Prepare the Car

O - OBSERVE

M - Move

Look around from left to right to make sure it is safe to move,

...then looking through the rear window and occasionally checking your position with a right sideways glance, slowly reverse until you are looking straight down the line between Bays 3 & 4. It is really important to be accurate and not to over-shoot this line.

This is your point of turn

STOP!
